Welcome home, dear!

Tomsk is a city in Russia located in the east of Western Siberia, the capital of the Tomsk region. It is a major educational, scientific and innovation center of Siberia. Following the link, you can find a lot of additional information about Tomsk now and in the past.

Tomsk is one of the oldest cities in Russia over 400 years old, and because of that it has some real heritage and history.
It has six different universities here, one of them being the oldest in the whole of Siberia. And therefore this is really an academic and scientific centre for this region.

These six universities are:

  1. Tomsk State University
  2. Tomsk Polytechnic University
  3. Siberian State Medical University
  4. Tomsk State Pedagogical University
  5. Tomsk State University of Architecture and Building
  6. Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics
That's because there's so many international and exchange students here. If you walk around you'll probably hear a bit of a different language every single day.

What is an Exchange Student?

An exchange student is usually a high school or college student who travels to a foreign country to live and study abroad, as part of a foreign exchange student program. Exchange students will attend classes at a local high school or university, usually as part of their current course of study (

Walking around the city

Every country has its customs. Every city has its unique atmosphere. Let's stroll (walk) around Tomsk and advance our impressions of this charming city.

Behind me is Tomsk State University, built in 1888. It's perhaps my favorite building in this city.
This is Novosobornaya Square – New Cathedral Square. It was named New Cathedral Square, because here once upon a time there was a cathedral, but it was knocked down during the Soviet Union.
This park is pretty big, includes this city's War Memorial, and also is a pretty cool place for young people and families to walk around, as I can see a lot of them doing so today.
There are about 1800 wooden houses in the historical district of the city of
One of the foremost examples of this famous wooden lace decoration is the house of Firebirds.

Living in a wooden house

Unknown talented masters left us a unique architectural heritage. Many old wooden houses are richly decorated with carvings, sometimes called "wooden laces". Siberian architects building them wished to show that wooden apartment houses were both beautiful and comfortable to live in.

I was curious to see what it was like inside the heritage home.
Edward Maidanyuk gave up a modern apartment for a corner of this old mansion.
This house was built at the beginning of the 20th century in 1908. And really, what you see is just how it was then. Nothing's been changed. It's all just as it was then.

We hope you've enjoyed the tour!
