The Sound of Music

Yellow Submarine (The Beatles):

The hills are alive…With the sound of music.

The hills are alive with the sound of music, with songs they have sung for a thousand years.

In 2001, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Based on the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian woman studying to become a nun in Salzburg, Austria in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children. After bringing and teaching love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith.

Georg Ritter von Trapp was born on April 4th, 1880, in Zara (now Zadar), Croatia, then still part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. His father was a navy captain. He wanted to embark on a navy career as well and attended the Royal Naval Academy. In 1910, he met Agathe Whitehead at a ball. It was love at the first sight and their marriage a society event. While still a young navy captain, the command of the submarine "U6" was assigned to him. During World War One, the French submarine "Leon Gambetta" was sunk by Trapp's mission. In 1916, he was promoted to lieutenant commander by Emperor Franz Josef I. After the war, Austria no longer had a coast and did not need a navy, Captain Trapp not only lost his post, but also his wife. Lady Whitehead died in 1924 and left him alone with seven children to look after. On November 26th 1927 he married Maria Kutschera, who was the governess for the captain's children before. In 1938, Austria was annexed to Adolf Hitler's German Empire and Captain Trapp was offered a high position in its navy. "I have sworn my oath of loyalty to only one Emperor" was his answer he rejected.

The girls in my dresses with blue satin sashes, snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes. Silver-white winters that melt into springs. These are a few of my favorite things! - Sew, a needle pulling thread, La, a note to follow sew. Tea - a drink with jam and bread. That will bring us back to Do. I simply remember my favorite things and then I don't feel so bad!!!

Now to remind us of some of our favorite things from The Sound of Music. The one and only Lady Gaga.

My Favorite Things.

The hills are alive with the sound of music, with songs they have sung for a thousand years. The hills fill my heart with the sound of music. My heart wants to sing every song it hears. My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds that rise from the lake to the trees…

Ladies and gentlemen! The incomparable Julie Andrews!

Following an initial theatrical release that lasted four and a half years, and two successful re-releases, the film sold 283 million admissions worldwide and earned a total worldwide gross of $286,000,000. The Sound of Music received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film also received two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress, the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement, and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Written American Musical.
