Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd,

by

..it’s starting legal actions against British oil companies and it’s continuing diplomatic tensions over the Falkland islands. Companies currently searching for oil near the islands would be taken to court.

Тэтчер, которая “took a cruiser with all hands” - потопила военный корабль вместе с командой аргентинских матросов.

Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands or Las Malvinas on April 2nd 1982. A ten week war between Britain and Argentina followed. It cost more than nine hundred troops their lives. At least six hundred and fifty were from Argentina and some two hundred and fifty from Britain. Three islanders were also killed.
The Argentine authorities had issued the islanders with a long list of do's and don'ts. They were to drive on the right hand side to the road. No one was to travel without military approval. Identity cards were issued. Food supplies were alright although shops were only allowed to open for two hours in the morning. Even then there weren’t many customers. Most Port Stanley people had left for the country or campus they call it leaving just a few families behind. The Argentine authorities also made a start in trying to get the islanders to learn Spanish. To avoid it as a gesture they refused to send their children to school.

Britain’s Royals are expected to serve in the armed forces. Prince Charles was in the Navy as was his brother prince Andrew. They flew helicopters during the Falkland’s war in 1982.
Argentina’s President has marked the 28th anniversary of the Falklands war by insisting that the issue of who should hold sovereignty over the islands is not yet over. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner told at ceremony that the Malvinas as they known in Argentina represent one of the last remaining examples of colonialism. Wendy Urquhart reports. A solemn day in Argentina. Thousands gather to pay their respects. But the issue of sovereignty over the Falkland Islands or Las Malvinas is clearly one that is far from settled. President Cristina Kirchner told the crowds that it was the time to remember those they’d lost. But it was most definitely not a time to forget about Las Malvinas and vowed to keep pushing for ownership of the Islands. (No puede ser) It’s not acceptable she said that the UN resolutions are expected to be adopted by weaker countries while one of the bigger countries has systematically violated one such resolution since 1965. This is what we’re arguing and will continue to argue for on all fronts. The anniversary was marching in Argentine capital Buenos Aires too where thousands raised their flags and marched pass the British Embassy. Guards kept watch as they passed the building. It was a peaceful demonstration but the protest has made their feelings about the war and about the sovereignty of the Islands abundantly clear. Relations between the two countries hit a new low earlier this year when Britain announced that it would begin drilling for oil around the shores of the Islands. Argentina responded by tightening shipping restrictions in the region. And tensions between the two countries rose once more. The Falklands or Las Malvinas lie just three hundred miles from the coast of Argentina and have been claimed at one time or another by Britain, France, Spain and Argentina. Britain seized the islands from Argentine settlers in 1833. And most of the people who live there now are of British descent. The two nations appear to agree that war is not the answer. But Argentina wants Las Malvinas back. And President Kirchner is determined to make that happen.

Falkland islanders have voted overwhelmingly in favor of retaining the Island’s status as a British overseas territory. Almost 99% of those eligible to vote cast their ballots in support of the status quo.
…plans by a British company to drill for oil and gas in the Falklands waters. They’re raising the red flags in Buenos Aires. Argentina’s foreign minister said Friday his country opposes the exploration. If you remember, Argentina and Britain fought a 73-day war over the Falkland Islands back in 1982.
British Prime Minister David Cameron says that the UK will always defend the people of the Falkland Islands. More than 99% of voters in the Falklands cast their ballots in favor of keeping the status as a British territory. The Islands however are also claimed by Argentina which calls them the “Malvinas” Islands. Cameron urged the Argentinean government to respect the islanders’ wishes.
